2017 South Pole and Mount Vinson Blogs (22)

It feels great to be on the move. Waking in the tent, turning on the stove, melting snow, making breakfast... it's the rhythm of expedition life. And we love it! Today was a beautiful day. -20°C /-4F°F, sunny, with an 8 kt breeze. For many of us that's darn cold, but it could be colder! Nonetheless there was a fair amount of fiddling with mitts, facemasks and goggles to keep everything warm and working well.

Ah, the feeling of getting dropped off. The plane disappearing into the horizon, the silence of nothing surrounding you but snow and ice for hundreds of miles, the anticipation of the journey ahead. It's an amazing moment that both our teams experienced today, and we are thrilled for them!

After going to bed quite late last night (actually, early this morning) everyone got some well needed rest. It felt good to finally be in Antarctica and to be sleeping in tents! The rest was likely all to brief before they awoke for a full day of preparations.

This update should start off with a big yawn, because it came to us around 3:30 AM local time. The teams made it to Antarctica and after a late (or perhaps we should say early) arrival around 12:30 AM. Soon after they had a nice meal (lamb stew, rice and veggies), set up tents and are now getting some much longed-for sleep.

South Pole Last Degree - And they're off!

Todays update from the team included several photos from their brief stay in Punta Arenas (see below). They also reported that their flight was on schedule (that is, the new schedule) and that they were just getting ready to depart for Antarctica.

The expedition kicks off!

Happy New Year and welcome to our 2017 South Pole Last Degree and Vinson expedition blog! The team has gathered in Punta Arenas, Chile and all are doing well.

Tonight everyone one gathered at the Shackleton Bar, named for famed Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, for a kick off welcome reception. After months of planning and preparations it was a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and share the anticipation.
