Presently, he is the Deputy Head of Mission at the Icelandic Embassy in Beijing, where he studied at Beijing University at the end of Mao's Cultural Revolution in the seventies. He studied Chinese philosophy at Tokyo University in the eighties, and later he translated the Analects of Konfucius and Laozi into Icelandic. Hjorleifur Sveinbjornsson
Iceland
Hjorleifur Svenbjornsson
Hjörleifur is presently working as a translator and part-time university teacher in Reykjavík, Iceland. Two years ago he compiled and edited an anthology of Chinese medieval fiction, in his own translation into Icelandic.  He has always preferred the great outdoors to being confined within four walls.  No ambition to excel in any particular activity, though. Being a jack-of-all-outdoor-trades, more like. This includes biking, running, swimming, hiking, camping etc. So, when an opportunity presented itself to go to the North Pole with a dear Chinese friend, their respective sons and a mutual friend he grabbed that chance with both hands.
Hrafnkell Hjorleifsson
Iceland
Hrafnkell Hjorleifsson
Hrafnkell has spent the last 20 years of his life in school and this has left him feeling a bit claustrophobic. So when the opportunity of undertaking a trip to the North Pole arose he didn’t have to think about it long and hard. In fact he didn’t have to think about it at all. A trek of the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal a few years ago left a lingering taste in his mouth and since that time he has been dreaming of further outdoors adventures, determined to make the North Pole the first of many. A philanthropist, a renowned economist and a polar explorer are all impressive things. Currently Hrafnkell can’t really claim to be any of these, but as he still views himself as being young and promising the North Pole is the perfect place to start.
Chris Salter
Australia
Chris Salter
Chris owns a Security business in Melbourne Australia and is a keen mountaineer. He recently summitted Mt Vinson in the Antarctic which was his 5th of the Seven Summits. He is a Physical Education Graduate and loves the outdoors. Chris has also done extensive trekking and climbing in Nepal.
Keith Heger - Guide USA
Keith Heger
Keith Heger is a master at navigating rubble zones and is famous for cooking up delicious fajitas. He joined PolarExplorers as a guide in 2002 and has guided trips all over the globe (though his favorite destination is the North Pole). He has guided expeditions to the North Pole, South Pole and across the Greenland Icecap. Prior to joining PolarExplorers Keith guided ski and mountaineering expeditions for such organizations as The National Outdoor Leadership School.
Dirk Jensen - Guide USA
Dirk Jensen
Before Dirk started guiding North Pole expeditions for PolarExplorers he led expeditions and traveled extensively in the Canadian sub-arctic. You could say that the Arctic-fever bug bit him hard. He has been guiding North Pole expeditions for PolarExplorers since 2005, but his guiding has taken him around the world. People love Dirk for his easygoing personality and his technical knowledge of everything from the pack-ice to the gear that we use. He's a great photographer and an excellent resource for anyone looking for

Tony Chounding
Australia
Tony Chounding I am 54 years old and have 3 adult children and I am self employed in the building industry. I enjoy many outdoor activities including bush walking, running and kayaking. I have been to the Arctic on two occasions, initially a self supported canoe trip from Jasper in British Colombia, to Inuvik, Northwest Territories. That trip took over 2 months along 3 rivers and was over 4000km. It whet my appetite for another Arctic experience, which led to my most recent trip which was a dogsled trip to Churchill, on Hudson Bay. That trip inspired and encouraged me to pursue a further adventure and led me to this current dogsled and ski trip to the North Pole. To date, my entire skiing experience amounts to a 5 minute spell during which I fell over twice across a distance of 5 metres. I am hoping to better that. In preparation for this trip I have been roller skiing every weekend and have taken to it like a duck to water, although in the ducks case they float in a more graceful manner than I do when i roller ski. I am very much looking forward to the skiing aspect of this trip, especially falling over in the snow, which I hope doesn't hurt as much as bitumen. I also like dogs - which is fortunate.

"In 2008 I broke my back in a parachuting accident, not too clever, which took sometime to recover. After a life time of different adventures I did not want to give up on the thrill of travel and experiences.. So I set a number of ambitions for the next two years as part of my recovery. I completed a London Marathon, summited Kilimanjaro and always wanted to dog Sleigh to the North Pole. So the adventure continues and I look forward to the North Pole trip."

Niall Carton
Russia
Niall has worked in ING for over 14 years. He spent 10 years in London in various roles within the Market Risk management department and 4 years in Moscow heading up the Financial markets department. Niall is now also responsible for Equity markets in Russia. Niall’s comments: It has always been a dream of mine to go to the North Pole although I never expected to realize it. It is a great opportunity to test my own limitations, drive and is a huge physical and mental challenge. To be able to realize a dream and at the same time raise money for a good cause like the Tula Orphanage was too good an opportunity to turn down. Having lived through 4 Russian winters I feel more comfortable with the temperatures that I am going to face on the expedition but I am a bit worried about camping out on the ice and meeting polar bears! I started training in November and will continue right up to the expedition itself; walking, playing squash and crosscountry skiing. In February I started pulling a sled around with weight to try and replicate the conditions that I will face.
Alexey Borichev

Alexey has worked in ING Commercial Banking in Russia since 2003. He started his career in the Custody department and has spent the last 8 years developing the Bank’s forex and interest rate trading operations and derivatives on the local and international markets. He currently heads the Forex and Interest Rate Trading department. Alexey’s comments: I think people should always be on the boundary between the possible and the impossible, making the improbable obvious. This is what enables mankind to progress, opening up and developing the hidden capabilities of the body and the mind. For me the North Pole has always been a place that no ordinary person can reach and I’ve been drawn to it by its inaccessibility. Doing this for charity gives the project a special meaning. Since childhood I’ve played various sports, but now the time has come to test my physical and mental abilities. And the severe weather conditions will be a further trial. It’s symbolic that I’m having to prepare for this expedition in London, where subzero temperatures and snow are anomalies. This is forcing me to think up tough training routines that are close as possible to the real thing. It would be wonderful to bump into a polar bear and shake his enormous paw!

Maria Conceicao
Maria Conceicao cont.

Maria was born in Portugal. Prior to moving to the UAE, Maria lived in Switzerland and England. Her first volunteer experience was during a working holiday in the slums of Brazil – an experience which had a huge impact on Maria and was the foundation to her humanitarian efforts.

In 2003 Maria joined a Dubai-based Airline in the UAE as a flight attendant. In April 2005, on one fateful flight to Bangladesh, Maria witnessed the extreme poverty in the slums of Dhaka – a contrast to the life of luxury in Dubai. Maria was not able to forget what she witnessed and one month later she returned to Dhaka determined to help the impoverished community.

In July 2005 with the support of her family, colleagues and friends, Maria started a charity project to help the many families in Dhaka, starting with a one-room school. Maria has spent the last 6 years developing and running humanitarian projects in Bangladesh focusing on providing free education to the children, thus breaking the cycle of poverty.Through her tireless efforts and commitment, her projects has reached over 700 slum children and their families to date.

In 2009, Maria began several other individual projects to eradicate poverty. One such project is the Maria Cristina Foundation, which aims to unlock and maximize human potential in developing countries. The foundation is involved in several current and planned projects, including MC Foundation Recruitment Institute, MC Foundation Community Project, MC Foundation School to School Projects and MC Foundation Community Health Program.

When it comes to her humanitarian efforts, Maria is best known for being a pioneer. In 2010, she brought a group of eight slum-dwelling children to study in UAE. She devotes herself completely to the ongoing challenge of paying for their education. When not occupied in training or fund-raising, Maria can be found typically playing the role of surrogate mother and counselor to these children who have been given such an important opportunity to gain a quality education and an excellent start in life.

Maria also pushes her own physical limits in pursuit of her cause. She is currently training to trek the North Pole in April 2011 to raise much needed funds. Her normal day routine starts at 6.15 am six times a week where she drags tires weighing 30-kilos up and down the beach in preparation for the challenging expedition. This is her second fundraising climb following her 2010 Mount Kilimanjaro climb. Despite a painful knee injury, she has also run several international marathons around the world, including in New York, London, Dublin, Dubai and Beirut.

She generally also spends many hours in meetings to secure sponsorships from local donors, and can also be found at one of many flea markets, selling clothes to raise much-needed funds. Maria has organized and led many fundraising initiatives over the years to raise funds and awareness for her humanitarian projects and to date her efforts has helped hundreds of destitute families and children.

Both organizations have given underprivileged communities the opportunity to transform their lives and go on to live truly rewarding lives. Maria is confident that the newly launched Maria Cristina Foundation will be able to extend support on a larger scale to many more underprivileged communities around the world.

No one is willing to swim in untested waters yet Maria sees no reason to give up on her dreams and passions. She believes in pushing boundaries and her famous saying is “IF NOT WE THEN WHO, AND IF NOT NOW THEN WHEN?” Maria is passionate about her work and a true inspiration to mankind.

Our lives are full of challenges that we face on a daily basis. But there are also moments when we ourselves challenge fate, circumstances and conditions. Niall Carton and Alexey Borichev from the ING Moscow Financial markets have resolved to leave behind the familiar comforts of civilized life and set off on a skiing expedition to the North Pole in April 2011. This is both a test of strength for the two men and a unique opportunity to raise money for charity. Their ultimate aim is not only to get close to the North Pole, but to help children who are being brought up in an orphanage without the warmth of parental love. Whilst ING Commercial Banking in Russia will cover the costs of preparing for the expedition, Niall and Alexey are seeking charitable donations from all who are willing to help. All the funds raised will be sent to ING Moscow’s preferred charity, the Tula Orphanage.
Tula School
Tula school

The Tula Orphanage School

One of the unfortunate results of the economic upheavals of the post-Soviet period has been the increase in the number of homeless children. In 2001 the Russian government and UNESCO estimated that there were up to three million homeless children in Russia. The Tula Orphanage School was established in 2001 as School- Internat (a home for orphaned school-aged children where they also attend classes inside the School-Internat). This school is one of the biggest in the Tula region and at the present moment has over 150 orphans. Some of the children have been abandoned, some have been orphaned through the death of their parents and some have simply run away from an abusive family. It is common that some of the children have left home due to alcoholism in the family leading to abuse. These children need our help. The school was built on the base of a former printing house and this is why substantial reconstruction and modernization works need to be completed. Government financing is not enough, on its own, to accomplish the tasks required. That is why corporations like ING Commercial Banking in Russia and private individuals take part in fund raising activities to support the orphanage in its endeavors to provide a better home and school for these disadvantaged children.

Charity Fundraising Niall and Alexey
We would be grateful for any donations you are able to make. All the funds raised will be handed over to the orphanage to improve the children’s living conditions.

Wendy Booker’s energy seems endless – it takes more than mountaineering, marathons, cycling, skydiving and Multiple Sclerosis to tame her passion for adventure.

In June of 1998, this mother of three was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS after experiencing balance problems, blurred vision and numbness on her left side. When first diagnosed, Wendy was devastated. But it took very little time for her to transform anguish into inspiration. She immediately turned her hobby of casual running into a continuous pursuit and has now completed nine marathons with number ten coming up this fall in New York.

Mountain climbing became the next conquest. In 2002 at the age of 46, Wendy joined a team of mountain climbers with MS who were attempting to climb Mt. McKinley (Denali) in Alaska. Although that expedition did not end in a summit, she was not to be deterred. Taking on one of the toughest mountains in the world a second time, Wendy became the first person with MS to stand atop Denali in 2004.

That feeling of accomplishment propelled her next aspiration: to climb the highest mountain on each continent. Just five years later, Wendy successfully reached the top of six mountains on her list – Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. McKinley, Mt. Elbrus, Mt. Aconcagua, Mt. Vinson Massif and Mt. Kosciusko – the first person with MS to summit six of the Seven Summits. After two attempts on Mt. Everest in 2009 and 2010, Wendy accepted that she had pushed MS to the highest it would allow her to go. She has found contentment in climbing 6 ½ of the Seven Summits and using the experience to empower others facing adversity to never give up and continue to scale new heights.

Wendy’s passion, strength and tenacity are garnering attention from national and international press, and her career has evolved from interior design to motivational speaking around the globe. The mission is always to educate, motivate and encourage anyone facing a challenge in life to push through and climb on - the view from the top is breathtaking.

Wendy Booker is a mountaineer, an adventurer, an explorer - and she’s not done yet. Next stop: the top of the world… the North Pole!
