DYE 2 Ski Expedition

“This expedition was hard. The sleds were heavy and the days were long, but crossing Greenland is not supposed to be easy! I'm so proud of what we did and how we did it. I'll always hold this expedition and the people who did it with me in high regard. ”

—  Name, Title

Dye 2 Ski Expedition

The Greenland Icecap is huge, remote, and challenging; and for those reasons it appeals to serious adventurers looking for a classic polar expedition. It takes a huge commitment of time and energy including a month for the expedition and many months of intense training. But it's possible to experience the Greenland Icecap without crossing it in it's entirety.

Roughly a third of the way across the icecap from west to east is the remote and abandoned DYE 2 radar station. This station is a significant milestone on the Greenland Crossing. One that's remarkable for it's otherworldly, frozen-in-time, somewhat creepy but always fascinating presence that stands out above the icecap like a scene from Star Wars.

We're offering the chance to ski to DYE 2 to, or from DYE 2, typically 10-12 days of skiing across the world's second largest icecap. On this expedition you'll immerse yourself in the Greenland Icecap, get to know it's moods and ways, and also get a chance to explore one of the oddest places on the planet.

This ski expedition demands previous sled hauling experience (check out our Shakedown), the desire and skill to endure long days with little relief, and the ability to solve problems and challenges as a positive team member.

Qualifications

This expedition is for people who have trained hard, are in great shape, and who are eager to push themselves physically and mentally. You need the mental toughness to wake up every morning ready for a challenge, day after day, without a break. Though the skiing is very demanding, it does not require significant skill. You will need to have very good cardiovascular endurance and the ability to pull a heavy sled for several hours at a time, with only short pauses. Most importantly you need to regulate your body temperature and energy so that you do not get too cold, or too hot, or "hit the wall" with fatigue. Towards the end of the day it is critical that you have the energy reserves to set up camp and help out with the basic necessities of camp life including making water, cooking, etc.

This expedition will encounter extreme conditions including high winds, limited visibility, snow, possibly rain, and cold temperatures. Living in such cold conditions 24 hours a day can be very challenging. This expedition demands that you stay well-fed and hydrated. You need to be proactive about keeping yourself healthy and free of injury.

You do not have to be a world class athlete to participate in and enjoy this expedition, but you do need to be 100% committed to your training and your expedition mindset. Every ounce of training and preparation will help make the expedition more enjoyable and safer.
