Dennis

Following a very enjoyable bottle or two of red wine Dennis agreed to trek to The North Pole with another good friend Alan Bussey. Dennis and Alan joined with PolarExplorers in March 2008 and with the help and guidance of Annie Aggins and Rick Sweitzer spent 17 days trekking to the North Pole covering over 150 statute miles and enjoying the experience of a lifetime.

Dennis is now in serious training and preparation for this South Pole trek in November 2011. He is keen to arrive at the South Pole in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Scott arriving in January 1912. Once again he is looking forward to working with PolarExplorers to achieve this aim.
Robert Douglass
USA
Bob Douglass

Bob Douglass grew up in Kentucky, attended college at Princeton University, and graduate school at the University of Wisconsin where he started cross-country skiing (what else are you going to do there in the winter if you can’t afford a snowmobile?). After a short postdoc at University College, University of London, he worked as a professor at the University of Virginia, followed by a stint at a government lab in New Mexico. Since then, Bob has worked for several hi-tech companies developing robots, sensors, and software. He currently serves as a vice president of SAIC and the director of product development for one of the divisions. An avid amateur paleontologist, he has volunteered with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for a quarter century and helped find or recover the most complete Stegosaur, the most southerly T-Rex, the largest Dimetrodon, and the oldest dinosaur and grasshopper in Colorado.  In 2006 Bob joined a Polar Explorers expedition to ski across 135 miles of broken ice to reach the North Pole. He works principally in Washington, D.C. and Denver, Colorado. He resides in Utah with his wife, Cyndi, and two wolfhounds across from the Loan Peak Wilderness.

Lisa Strom - Guide
Sweden
Lisa Strom

Lisa Stom (age: 35?) grew up in Sweden and currently lives in Longyearbyen, Norway. We first worked with Lisa in 2006 when she joined our expedition staff as North Pole guide. Along with her impressive set of skills and endless energy she brought four teams of Greenland huskies and managed to keep them all in line, an impressive feat! She has a long history of guiding people in the Arctic including crisscrossing Svalbard on various expeditions during the polar night and polar spring. In the warm months she is a naturalist aboard sailing vessels exploring the Arctic. In addition to Arctic guiding she acts as a field safety and logistics coordinator for various productions and documentaries, most frequently shooting polar bear footage (she was responsible for keeping David Attenburg safe during one of his recent visits to shoot a documentary). She has also guided in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctic peninsula. In her spare time she prefers to go on personal expeditions, including a recent attempt to dogsled the entire Northwest Passage, which she had to abort a grueling three months into the expedition after sea ice conditions deteriorated.  Lisa has traveled outside the polar regions, including an expedition in Mongolia by horseback and a trip to Kilimanjaro (yes, she reached the top). She has also guided winter camping trips in the USA. Lisa is friendly, personable and fun to be around. She is very humble and sincere. She has a sense of humor and sparkle in her eye that will make long days pass a little easier. We think you will enjoy traveling with her very much.
Oskar Strom - Guide
Sweden
Oskar Strom
Growing up on the west coast of Sweden Oskar started sailing and kayaking during the summer at an early age. The winters he spent skiing in the Swedish and Norwegian mountains. After visiting Svalbard in 2002 he decided to move to Longyearbyen, where he has been living and working since 2004. Oskar is a wonderful guide with years of experience guiding ski expeditions, as well as dogsledding, snow mobile and hiking expeditions. Apart from guiding he has worked with film/photo projects around Svalbard, South Georgia and Canada. Oskar is an avid naturalist and has worked with expedition cruise companies in this capacity in Svalbard and Greenland. When he is not working in the field, Oskar shares his enthusiasm and expertise for outdoor gear with customers as an associate at an outdoor store in Longyearbyen. During his time off Oskar enjoys his own private expeditions, both on Svalbard and abroad. Among his favorites expeditions are 35 days on 750 kilometer ski expedition over the Lake Baikal in Siberia, 75 days bicycling and kayaking 6000 kilometers from Sweden to the Black Sea and  30 days on a ski and kite trip on Svalbard . Oskar is often found sea kayaking, skiing or paragliding. He loves being in the outdoors and always brings his camera.

Dave Nelsen USA
DAve Nelsen
In 1994, Mr. Nelsen successfully negotiated and closed a transaction transferring the ownership of Nelsen Steel Company (founded by his grandfather in 1939) from 40 family members to himself.    The negotiation of this highly leveraged earn-out transaction took two and a half years and was scheduled to pay out over a minimum of 10 years, and 15 maximum.  He shrunk the business down to a much more profitable base, disposed of non-core assets, retired the seller notes, and paid off all bank debt in three years.  Mr. Nelsen subsequently has grown the company back to a larger size than it was before the acquisition and disposal of non-core businesses and assets.

Additionally, Mr. Nelsen is a founding director of a De-Novo (newly chartered) bank holding company, American Chartered Bank.  The bank was founded in 1987 and today has $2,800,000,000 in assets.  All of this growth has been organic.  He is a member of the directors’ loan committee.  Mr. Nelsen has been on the Audit Committee and chaired the committee from 1998 to 2001.  He is currently on the Strategic Planning Committee (Executive Committee).

Further, Mr. Nelsen is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), an international education-based organization of CEO’s under 55 years of age, whose companies have 50 employees and revenues over $10,000,000US.  He has held offices in the local (Chicago Chapter), regional (East Central Region), and international levels of the organization.  These include Chapter Chair of the Chicago Chapter (2003-4), Regional Chair (2004-5), and Vice Chairman of the International Board (2006-7).    During his three-year term on the International Board (2004-7), Mr. Nelsen sat on the Audit Committee (2005-6) and spent two years (2005-7) negotiating and documenting a merger between YPO and a graduate (or alumni) organization of former members of YPO called WPO.  This merger was successfully completed on June 30, 2007 and has over 16,000 members in 105 countries and combined annual revenues of over $40,000,000.  He was awarded its highest honor “The Hickok Award” (named after the founder of YPO) in 2009.

Married to Susan since 1981, he is the father of three children.  Mr. Nelsen enjoys spending time with his family.  Other activities he enjoys are automobile restoration, golfing, fishing and sailing as well as water, Alpine and Nordic skiing.

Ivan Finotti Brazil
Ivan Finotti Hi, I am a 41 year old brazilian journalist, very urban and who is not used to the wild nature. The most radical adventure I have ever been envolved with was climbing a little tree behind my family's house to grab some berries, and I was a child then.

For the last 20 years, I’ve been writing about arts and entertainment for a lot of magazines and newspaper, but mainly to “Folha de S.Paulo”, the largest and most influential daily newspaper in Brazil. I've also written a book and made a documentary (which won a prize at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival) about Coffin Joe, the brazilian Ed Wood, a director of cheap horror movies in the Sixties and the Seventies.

At “Folha”, I wrote a lot for “Ilustrada” (the arts supplement), have been an editor for the teen supplement “Folhateen” and also worked in the monthly newspaper magazine, the beautiful “Serafina”.

In this trip, I’m looking forward to having some fun and knowing what kind of people loves to be at minus 30 degrees (I´m a Celsius speaker). I’m currently dating my ex-wife and that’s who I hope to call from the South Pole, if I survive.

Continued...

Rob Leggeiro Rob Leggiero was involved in a serious motorcycle accident on July 1, 2006 in which he sustained 17 broken bones. He broke his back in 4 places, broke his neck, and 12 ribs. The bike pinned him and dragged him down the road beneath it. He had
serious road rash, 3rd degree burns, a punctured and collapsed lung, a lacerated liver, and damage to his left eye. This was all background noise because he had traumatic brain injury (TBI).

He had 4 subdural hematomas which paralyzed him. He lost the use of his left
leg and right arm. He was 2 weeks critical in a level 1 trauma center ICU.
Eventually he was moved to the TBI unit at the Burke Rehabilitation Center
in White Plains, New York. It was a while before he was coherent, knew
who he was, or recognized anyone. Very hard for his family. Once he got past
that, he had to learn to walk again and to write. Basically had to re-learn
everything. Years of rehab.

An estimated 1.7 million children and adults in the U.S. sustain a traumatic brain
injury each year. Currently more than 3.1 million live with a lifelong disability
as a result of TBI and an estimated 1.1 million have a disability due to stroke.

These numbers do not include the growing number of wounded veterans of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Called the “Signature Wound” of the war, TBI caused by explosions has become one of the most common combat wounds suffered in Iraq. Soldiers sometimes walk away from explosions with no obvious injuries. But the concussion from the blast can have a lingering effect that is not always immediately apparent. The military estimates that one-fifth of the troops with mild brain injuries will have prolonged or lifelong symptoms requiring continuing care.

In April of 2006, just 4 months before Rob's accident, pro cyclist Saul Raisin crashed in France during a tune up race for the Giro d'Italia. Like Rob, Saul had suffered traumatic brain injury and was not given much chance of survival or hope to live a normal life if he did. Yet, he defied all doctor's predictions with his recovery. Saul has left pro cycling and has dedicated his life to helping other TBI survivors and their families. He formed the Raisin Hope Foundation and has written a wonderful book "Tour de Life: From Coma to Competition".

Wendy Booker explore with me

w w w . w e n d y b o o k e r . n e t

Wendy Booker’s energy seems endless – it takes more than mountaineering, marathons, cycling, skydiving and Multiple Sclerosis to tame her passion for adventure.

In June of 1998, this mother of three was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS after experiencing balance problems, blurred vision and numbness on her left side. When first diagnosed, Wendy was devastated. But it took very little time for her to transform anguish into inspiration. She immediately turned her hobby of casual running into a continuous pursuit and has now completed nine marathons with number ten coming up this fall in New York.

Mountain climbing became the next conquest. In 2002 at the age of 46, Wendy joined a team of mountain climbers with MS who were attempting to climb Mt. McKinley (Denali) in Alaska. Although that expedition did not end in a summit, she was not to be deterred. Taking on one of the toughest mountains in the world a second time, Wendy became the first person with MS to stand atop Denali in 2004.

That feeling of accomplishment propelled her next aspiration: to climb the highest mountain on each continent. Just five years later, Wendy successfully reached the top of six mountains on her list – Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. McKinley, Mt. Elbrus, Mt. Aconcagua, Mt. Vinson Massif and Mt. Kosciusko – the first person with MS to summit six of the Seven Summits. After two attempts on Mt. Everest in 2009 and 2010, Wendy accepted that she had pushed MS to the highest it would allow her to go. She has found contentment in climbing 6 ½ of the Seven Summits and using the experience to empower others facing adversity to never give up and continue to scale new heights.

Wendy’s passion, strength and tenacity are garnering attention from national and international press, and her career has evolved from interior design to motivational speaking around the globe. The mission is always to educate, motivate and encourage anyone facing a challenge in life to push through and climb on - the view from the top is breathtaking.

Wendy Booker is a mountaineer, an adventurer, an explorer - and she’s not done yet. Next stop: the top of the world… the North Pole!
