The team dogsledded across Inglefield Fjord to an abandoned community on Herbert Island called Qeqertarssuaq. The town was abandoned around 1990 and most people moved to Qaanaaq. It was the home of Regine, our team's host in Qaanaaq. She arrived there after her family was displaced from their home near the current Thule air base. In "ghost" communities you can often find homes that still have pictures on the walls and items on the shelves. It's clear that their history is still very much alive even if no one lives there.

It was a beautiful day but one of the coldest so far. Everyone did a great job. Their polar bear pants certainly helped! Traditional clothing can be much warmer than the best outerwear made from synthetics and even down.

The whole team, all 8 of them, shared a house which made it a warm night. They walked up to the old church where Gustav played the piano and sang for everyone. It was a great day.

Tomorrow they will dogsled to the community of Siorapaluk. Check back again for another update from the ice!

PS - In Greenlandic Qeqertarssuaq means "Big Island", which it is. It's also called Herbert Island after the British polar explorer Wally Herbert who lived there with his wife for several years.
