Annie reports: "Today was a good day with a wind from the NNW but sun all day. We skied for six eighty-minute pushes and one 40-minute push where each person led for 10 minutes. We made 20.3 miles from our last campsite. We saw some awesome wave-like clouds; I think they are called Helmholtz clouds?"
The team is now just 40 miles from the coastal navigation waypoint! Yes, Annie, those wave-like formations you observed are indeed Helmholtz clouds—more commonly known as Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds. These striking, short-lived formations resemble breaking ocean waves and occur when faster-moving air sits above slower, denser air, causing the boundary between the two to ripple and curl.
These clouds may have been a precursor to the air boundary the team is currently under. They are tent-bound today as winds are sustained at 40 mph with higher gusts. The forecast suggests these conditions will ease sometime tomorrow. The team is ready for the final miles of this epic crossing. Stay tuned for the final push.
