Arctic Circle Trail RECAP: The Final Five Days

The 2026 Arctic Circle Trail winter traverse was a super special expedition!

We set out at the tail end of a historically warm and low snow winter in Greenland. In the weeks leading up to the start there was some uncertainty as to whether there would even be enough snow to travel by skis and pulk sleds.

The team even brought along detachable wheels for their sleds in case they encountered long stretches of bare ground. And indeed they did use them, but only for the first hour or so of the journey before they reached some frozen lakes and better snow conditions.

The uncharacteristically "bad" winter did provide the team with quite a nice benefit though. The Arctic Circle Trail is quite sparsely traveled in winter to begin with, but the seemingly difficult conditions of 2026 dissuaded many would-be skiers from even attempting the traverse. This led to a delightfully solitary experience for our team. For eight days they only saw three other people total!

The Arctic Circle Trail is gorgeous. It runs through immaculately pristine environments, from rolling hills to sheer walled lakes to mountain passes and narrow valleys. Experiencing this wonderful trail in almost totally serene solitude is such a treat.

See below for a recap of the final five days that our 2026 team spent on western Greenland's wonderful Arctic Circle Trail.

Day Five: Lake Tasersuaq to the Base of the Highlands

Day Six: The First Big Climb

Day Seven: Big Descent to Near Sea Level

Day Eight: The Sea Ice at the Base of "Murder Hill"

Final Day: STEEP Climbing and Arrival in Sisimiut!

This 90-mile journey through some of the most beautiful and fascinating terrain in Greenland is challenging and incredibly rewarding.
