More Wind on the Way?!

The Ruff Riders enjoyed a day of calmer wind today. Tomorrow is forecast to be windier--perhaps too windy to travel by the evening. But the silver lining is that the sun is supposed to shine bright and burn off the overcast haze that's settled over the icecap for most of the last week.

A bright sunny day on the ice can be so energizing! Some people assume that the icecap scenery isn't all that interesting, but we strongly disagree. Sunny days reveal such amazing colors in the sky and snow. It kind of feels like a dream world. You're such a tiny speck in absolutely immense fields of beautiful, saturated colors.

The Riders are starting to think about there next major milestone along the trail. They're currently a few days of skiing from an abandoned Cold War era radar station called Dye 2. It was part of a radar network called the DEW Line.

Ever since its abandonment in 1988, Dye 2 has been slowly slipping beneath drifting snow banks. But it's still possible to get inside and explore the fascinating facility. Dye 2 is the subject of the next installment of the Greenland Crossing Video Series. See below for the first of two videos about this classic stop along the crossing trail.
