All of our team members have arrived in Punta Arenas (with all luggage!) and as with any true adventure, plans are already changing as they adapt to unforeseen events. Flight delays to/from Antarctica are the generally the rule rather than the exception and the team has been notified that their flight to Antarctica (originally scheduled for January 3rd) has been delayed until January 9th. The reason for this delay is cited as COVID infections in some of the flight crew. We will report on this as more information becomes available.
Despite this delay, team morale remains high and they are making the most of their time in Punta Arenas. Following a tradition that two of our team members (Shelley and Adam) share, the whole team went for a refreshing dip in the ocean on New Year's Day! Current ocean temperatures are hovering around 50°F (9-10° C), and if you've ever swam in those temperatures you know just how brisk it is. This festive swim garnered attention from the local media and our team was featured on the front page of both local and regional newspapers. What a way to start off the New Year.
We will continue to share important updates as the team awaits their flight to Antarctica, and any additional escapades they may have in the mean time.
